Renting or Purchasing an Instrument
Purchasing an instrument is a big decision, as instruments are not inexpensive. Cheap instruments typically don’t hold up well and will hinder your child’s ability to learn. When purchasing an instrument you should only consider name brands with strong reputations of quality and playability.
Many parents choose to rent an instrument for the first year. You will avoid the losses should your child not take to music or decide to switch instruments. Typically, once you are confident your child enjoys the instrument, it’s most cost-effective to purchase an instrument for the long haul.
Beware of companies that offer purchase or rental deals ‘too good to be true’, many of these fly-by-night companies provide substandard instruments. Other companies have many hidden fees and surcharges in the fine-print of their rental contracts.
*Students that are in a Paul Effman Music program at a private or catholic school are eligible for a special rental program, which offers instruments at greatly reduced rates. Please see the program registration form for additional information on the rental program.
