Instruments – Trombone

The trombone is a member of the brass family of instruments. The trombone is the only instrument in the band the uses a long slide instead of buttons or holes to change the sound of the instrument. The trombone plays low notes and bass parts in the band. The trombone section is usually split in two or more groups to play different harmonies throughout a song.

While the trombone is the largest band instrument, it is also one of the lightest. There is a height limitation on trombone due to the length of the slide. We generally don’t recommend that anyone play the trombone until 4th grade.

If your child desires to play the trombone but is too young, we recommend you start on the trumpet. The way you produce a sound on a trombone is identical on the trumpet, so it is easy for students to transition from the trumpet to the trombone.
